Shell Lake sits about 90 kilometres west of Prince Albert. It was once part of the Rural Municipality of Shell Lake No. 495 before that municipality was absorbed by the RM of Spiritwood No. 496, and it became an incorporated village on October 18, 1940. In 1967, a nearby farm was the scene of the Shell Lake murders.
